Лаборатория гляциология была создана в 1948 году, то есть со дня образования Тянь-Шанская физико-географическая станция (ТШФГС), для гляциологического исследования ледника Кара-Баткак
Лаборатория гляциология выполняла уникальные гляциологические исследования по программам Международного геофизического года (МГГ), Международного года спокойного солнца (МГСС), Международного гидрологического десятилетия (МГД), результаты которых публиковались во многих центральных и зарубежных изданиях. Ледник Кара-Баткак был занесен в Международный каталог ледников, данные по балансу массы которого публиковались ЮНЕСКО в серийном издании « Fluctuations of glaciers».
На станции ежегодно проходили практику по гидрологии, гляциологии, метеорологии, биогеографии студенты МГУ, Ленинградского гидрометеорологического института и других ВУЗов страны.
В 90-е годы из-за сокращения финансирования станция пришла в упадок, научные исследования практически прекратились и лишь в 2006г., после передачи станции на баланс ИВПиГЭ НАН КР, был частично восстановлен штат сотрудников, В 2007г. были восстановлены наблюдения за абляцией ледника Кара-Баткак в стандартных точках и наблюдения за снегонакоплением, прекращенные в 1997г. Возобновлены, ранее прерванные, наблюдения за температурой и влажностью воздуха, атмосферными осадками на леднике Кара-Баткак. Отремонтированы домик гляциологов на леднике Кара-Баткак (3200 м), здания МС Чон-Кызыл-суу (2550 м), главное здания ТШВНЦ итд. (Рис. 4,5,6.)
